December 2, 2008 -The 16th annual Saskatchewan Book Awards were presented on Nov. 29 at a gala ceremony at Regina’s Conexus Arts Centre. Winners in 14 categories were chosen from a shortlist of 54 titles and 81 nominations. 19th November Rawi Hage's Cockroach has won the 2008 the QWF's Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction. Six category winners received $2,000 each.
Toronto – November 17, 2008 –
Winnipeg writer Miriam Toews (right)received the $25,000 Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize for The Flying Troutmans, a comic novel about a young woman and her niece and nephew on a motel-hopping road trip in search of the children’s father.Montreal writer Taras Grescoe won the $25,000 Writers’ Trust Non-Fiction Prize for Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood, an account of the global crisis of fisheries and its implications, as well as a practical guide to sustainable consumption.
Four authors received awards for their excellence in literature: Sylvia Fraser,Michael Kusugak,Saleema Nawaz,and MichaelWinter. Additionally, Rogers received an award for its long-standing support of the Writers’ Trust. Seven prizes were awarded with a combined value of $155,000, making the event one of the richest awards nights in Canada. The prize amounts of several awards have increased by up to $10,000 from last year, reaffirming theWriters’ Trust’s commitment to supporting Canadian writers.
11 th November- Novelist Joseph Boyden has won the 2008 Scotiabank Giller Prize, one of the country's most prestigious literary awards. Boyden received $50,000 in prize money for his book Through Black Spruce. More
7th November Toronto-Christopher Paul Curtis was the big winner at this years Canadian Children’s Literature Awards with Elijah of Buxton (Scholastic Canada), winning both the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, worth $20,000 and the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction, worth $5,000.
